THEATRE SPOTS

by Barry Daniels

Falsettos is the opening production of the Broadway Series at the Palace Theatre in Columbus. The national tour of this Tony award winning musical by William Finn and James Lapine stars Greg Edelman (Tony award for his performance in City of Angels) and includes Heather MacRae, Stephen Bogardus and Carolee Caramello from the original Broadway production.

Falsettos is in two parts and chronicles the coming out of Marvin and his relationships with his lover, his ex-wife and son. It is an accurate and often moving portrayal of gay lives in the period between Stonewall and the first appearance of AIDS. When Marvin's lover, Whizzer, comes down with a mysterious disease, the characters exhibit a strength of spirit that reflects the maturity of their love as well as a growing sense of community. James Lapine's staging elegantly matches the continuous flow of William Finn's melodic and witty score. (See my review of the Broadway production in the June 25 issue of the Chronicle.)

Performances are September 28 through October 3; Tuesday through Friday at 8 pm; 2 pm and 8 pm Saturday; and 2 pm and 7pm Sunday. Tickets ($23.50-$36.50) are available at the Broadway Series office, 10 West Broad Street; the Ohio and Palace Theatres, and at all TicketMaster locations. Tickets may be charged by telephone at 614431-3600. A portion of the proceeds of single ticket and group sales tickets for the Thursday evening performance, September 30, will go to benefit the Columbus AIDS Task Force.

Dobama Theatre is opening its season on September 24 with a production of Albert Innuarato's fantasy-comedy, Gus and Al, directed by Ron Newell. Innaurato is the author of the Broadway success, Gemini (1976), as well as numerous off-Broadway plays including The Transfiguration of Benno Blimpie and Coming of Age in Soho. Gus and Al was premiered at New York's Playwright's Horizons Theatre in 1989.

The play's protagonist, Al, an obese Italian-American gay playwright in despair over a set of bad reviews, is whisked back in time to Gustave Mahler's home in turn-of-thecentury Vienna. The two misunderstood and suffering artists become fast friends. The play is an intellectual bedroom farce in which the sexually awkward Mahler is the prize in a battle involving his long-time assistant Natalie and the free-spirited, "new woman," Alma. The cast includes a talking gorilla, Freud, Mahler's sister, and a cute Italian gardener. Al, a combination of angst and self-loathing, is an autobiographical portrait of the gay playwright. Innaurato's writing is smart, bitchy, campy, and great fun.

The production runs through October 17; Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm; first two Sundays at 7:30 pm; second two Sundays at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $8 on Thursday and Sunday; $10 on Friday and Saturday (reductions for students and seniors). For reservations telephone 932-6838.

The Working Theatre's excellent production of Vaclav Havel's Redevelopment or Slum Clearance, reviewed in the Sept. 3 Chronicle, continues through October 3, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 3 pm. For reservations telephone 696-9600.
